The Republic

The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the Federal Government are few and defined.
-James Madison, Federalist Papers

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
-George Washington

Explaining Democracy vs. Republic

Now I know you are all impressed by my visual interpretation of a democratic government and a republic government. Basically if you do not know this or have never been taught this, America is a republic. A republic government was a brand new thing when the founder's laid it out. A democracy is a style of government where the mass population of people go vote on a law. In a democracy laws and political positions were decided on by popular vote. The founders saw flaws and abuses of power in that form of government so they laid out a style that they called a republic. In a republic government, the people would vote for representatives who would then in turn vote on the laws. The representatives were hired by the people to interpret the laws for them because the people were mostly too busy to have the time to go through pages and pages of laws.

The founders were convinced that this was the best form of government because it would speak well for the people and if any abuses of power would come around from the representatives, they could be quickly voted out by the people because the people employed the representatives. And the republic worked almost flawlessly for about 140 years. However, during the early 1900s, progressivism began infecting our government. Representatives sought more and more power and began expanding government. This should have been easily dealt with but perhaps the biggest con of a republic came into play. Carelessness of the voters.

The only way corrupt politicians would hold their positions is if the voters didn't respond and kick them out and that is exactly what has been happening the last 100 years of our country. America needs to be reminded that we are the employers of the politician that spends our money and tries to change our values. The people are supposed to be represented by our politicians, not ruled. Remember this and restore America to a true republic.
